While in Coos Bay, be sure to visit the Prefontaine Gallery located in the Coos Art Museum in downtown Coos Bay**. In the lobby, you will find the original painting that was done by Chris Hopkins. Moving upstairs to the Gallery, you will find some of the photos on these pages and many, many more. Also, showcased in a trophy case are most of the medals, ribbons and trophies that Steve Prefontaine received during his short career.

The photos below were taken by Chuck Dyer on November 15, 1969 at the Pac 8 Conference Cross Country Championships held at Stanford University. Mr. Dyer was a freshman at Stanford and a JV member of the Stanford Cross Country Team.

Runner racing with Pre is Gerry Lindgren. Pre was a freshman at University of Oregon and Lindgren was a senior at Washington State University. The first two pictures are mid-race and the third is at the finish line. Although the picture looks like Pre won, the race was declared a tie and Lindgren was actually awarded the win.
