Steve Prefontaine

International Track Star - Running Legend

Notes From Speech Pre Made In 1974

The images linked below were scanned from original notes used by Steve Prefontaine to deliver the keynote address at a banquet held in Eugene, Oregon in November, 1974. The banquet was held the night prior to the 1974 National Junior College Cross Country Championships. The notes are in Pre's own handwriting and give an excellent incite as to Steve's thoughts about the sport of cross country running.

The Prefontaine Memorial Committee would like to thank Rich Rohde for his thoughtfulness in donating the notes to the Prefontaine family. Rich was a participant in the 1974 National Junior College Championships and after the banquet had asked for Pre's autograph. Upon recently going through the banquet program, Rich found Pre's original notes within.

Rich is now a Geography and Early & Modern World History teacher at Twin River Public Schools in Genoa, Nebraska and is the Head Cross Country and Track Coach.

Many thanks to Rich for making these notes available to the Prefontaine family and to Pre's many fans.
