Steve Prefontaine

International Track Star - Running Legend

Prefontaine Scholarship Program

In 2005, the Prefontaine Memorial Run Committee established a scholarship program to benefit Coos County high school students who have participated in cross country and/or track and field programs at their respective schools.

To qualify for scholarship consideration, the student must be a high school senior, have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, have been a resident of Coos County since at least September 1st of the previous year, have participated in either cross country and /or track and field and have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their sport.

Each candidate is asked to provide an official transcript and an activities chart showing their involvement in school/family/community activities, volunteer service, and work for pay. Finally, the student is asked to write a 250-400 word essay on what one of three Steve Prefontaine quotes means to them:

  1. “Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run.”
  2. “A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts.”
  3. “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”

The Prefontaine Memorial Run Committee meets in the spring to review the applications and to decide who will be recipients of a $1,000 scholarship.

Congratulations and best wishes to each for continued success as they pursue college degrees.

Running and Beauty

An Essay by Andrew Davidson

Any great artist, novelist, or composer will spend hours upon days creating the masterpiece they are devoutly passionate about. I too spend a comparable amount of time, energy, and compassion creating the masterpiece and achieving the goals I have set for myself and those around me. However, I am no artist, novelist, or composer. I am a runner.

For me, Steve Prefontaine's quote "Some people create with words or with music or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run,"

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift."

When people put a half-hearted effort into their dreams, they put a half-hearted effort into all that they do, and soon find they have half a heart. And a person who's got half a heart gets half of the job done, and gets half of the satisfaction, and gets half of the happiness. Frustration sets in when their dreams are not just be handed to them.

Before the summer of 2003 I had never dreamed my future would include the sport of running. As a child I grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, which meant that 90 degree days with 99% humidity was the norm. Any sport that didn't involve more than half of your body immersed in cool saltwater was completely out of the question.

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

As I get into position on the starting line, I feel as though I am a monster being unleashed to expose its furry to the world. But as the race begins and the first mile is too far away to ever remember, my fire begins to dwindle. It first starts in my lungs. My breathing becomes raspy as my lungs beg for the necessity that they are denied. I begin to imagine that this must be what a fish feels like.

During cross-country my sixth grade year, the name Steve Prefontaine meant very little to me. I was new to Coos Bay, and new to running. However, I quickly learned how important he is because on the back of my team shirt it said, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift," -Steve Prefontaine.

Prefontaine meant more and more to me as I learned more about him. Partly because of how mentally tough he must have been. My biggest weakness is my lack of confidence.

"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the Gift"

Every human on this planet has been given gifts. No matter what the gift is, it is given to us to be used. Some are gifted with art. Some are gifted with kindness. Ever since I was little I was gifted with the ability to run and compete. No matter what the sport was, I seemed to show the determination that most other kids couldn't find. If I did anything less than my best, I would work that much harder. I began to find as I was growing up that running was my true talent. God had gifted me with the ability to do great things.
